Uganda
Half of Uganda's population are children under the age of 14. The average age of the country's total population is currently 16 years old, which represents one of the youngest populations in the world. Although significant progress has been made to support the population in recent decades, Uganda remains a country struggling with severe poverty.
Combined with high population growth, low education rates, poor working conditions and inadequate health care, these factors place enormous burdens on the country and its people. These have a serious impact on Uganda's children. Many of them, especially in remote rural regions, are denied access to the fundamental rights enshrined in the International Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Problem
In Uganda, overpopulation and agricultural problems have led to an economic crisis. Vulnerable children are forced into labor-intensive agricultural jobs instead of receiving a much-needed education. Many of them are orphans, largely left alone - without support - due to the consequences of HIV and malaria.
If you want to walk far, walk together

Our mission
We work to support the education and health of orphans and other vulnerable children in Kigezi, in Uganda's southwestern highlands. In addition to the essential school education, we promote the development of independent small businesses such as poultry and livestock farming, bakery, beekeeping, crafts and other micro-enterprises. In doing so, we hope to promote the financial sustainability of the project in order to enable the children to enter into a self-determined, marketable future.

Kigezi Community School
Starting point of our work
Around 300 students are currently being taught here

One day we would like to reach 5,000 children in the Kigezi region
0.5% of Uganda's needy children,
so little - and yet so much
Our main Goals
-
Educational empowerment
We ensure that the orphans receive a high-quality education, provide them with school materials and, where possible, try to provide scholarships for vocational training in order to give the children a successful start into the future
-
Health and well-being
We support the local population to access health services, including regular check-ups, vaccinations and access to medical facilities for the orphans in the Kigezi region
-
Shelter and infrastructure
By building or renovating buildings, we try to improve the living conditions of the students and help to ensure appropriate accommodation for orphaned children
-
Training programs and workshops
We strive to equip learners with essential life and vocational skills and entrepreneurial skills to enhance their future prospects
-
Sustainability
By involving the local community in long-term development plans, we pursue the building and expansion of local capacities and the establishment of mechanisms to ensure lasting positive impacts on the lives of (orphan) children
-
Community empowerment through agriculture
We launched the Amazima Community Initiative, which aims to strengthen communities and increase household incomes with the help of companies along the coffee value chain, enabling parents and guardians to send their children to school while improving food security and quality.
-
Partnerships and networking
We work with local and international organizations, NGOs and government agencies to bring resources, expertise and support to the Kigezi Orphan Project
-
Monitoring and evaluation
We participate in the implementation of a robust monitoring and evaluation system to track the progress of the project, assess its impact and make necessary adjustments for continuous improvement

Caring for children is caring for the future
